Best GTA 6 mod categories

Choose your type of GTA 6 mod. Whether you're into graphics mods, custom cars, scripts, weapons or complete conversions, every category links directly to the newest uploads on our partner GTAModding.net.

Vehicles

Vehicle mods are the biggest single category of GTA 6 modding. They swap out stock cars for hand-crafted supercars, tune handling files to sim-grade standards, replace engine note clips with recorded audio, and overhaul the dealer list with brand-faithful replicas.

Maps

Map mods alter GTA 6's static world geometry, whether by adding new interiors, replacing entire districts, constructing custom islands, or extending the coastline of Leonida. The two most used file types are MLO (multiple loaded objects - used for interiors) and YMAP (used for prop and decal placement).

Scripts

Script mods allow creators to add genuinely new functionality to GTA 6 - missions, game mechanics, AI behaviours, world events. These mods hook into the game's built-in script VM via ScriptHook + ASI Loader, a .NET wrapper for both C# and F#, or community-made Lua frameworks for rapid prototyping.

Player

Player mods range from one re-textured T-shirt to a fully rigged, unique protagonist model with custom face morphs and ragdoll customisation. The second most-installed category after vehicles, they offer large visual differences with small file sizes and can easily be layered on top of each other.

Weapons

Weapon mods change or supplement the vanilla weapon loadout by adding new 3D models, hit decals, muzzle flashes, and sounds. Weapon mods are common for both realism alterations and themed weapon sets (WWII, science-fiction, modern tactical and fantasy weapons).

Textures

Texture and graphics mods offer the most dramatic visible improvement per install. ReShade presets apply film-quality colour grading on top of the base renderer. Texture packs replace the in-game road, wall and vehicle assets with hand-painted 4K alternatives. Weather overhauls rebuild the storm system with volumetric clouds.

Tools

Modding tools are at the core of every other category. RPF editors extract and repack the game's archive files. Mod managers keep track of what's installed, handle conflicts, and roll back when a load order breaks. Map editors allow modders to visually edit the game's terrain, props, and lights. Asset converters export 3D meshes from Blender, Maya, and 3ds Max to the game's native formats.

UI / Menus

UI mods and trainer mods are mods that create persistent in-game menus and HUD replacements. Trainer mods (typically bound to F4 or the numpad) aggregate lots of cheats and developer tools into one easy-to-use menu: spawn vehicles, teleport to waypoint, stop time, infinite ammo, free camera, adjust time of day.

Audio

Audio mods allow you to modify the game's sound buckets: radio, engine sounds, weapon foley, world ambience, dialogue. Audio mods offer the biggest wow factor for the least effort - replacing one radio station can completely alter the atmosphere of a long drive.

Misc

The miscellaneous category contains small quality-of-life changes that don't fit cleanly into any of the other nine categories. They tend to be the smallest in file size but can have the biggest impact on your daily gameplay. One tiny QOL change can make you see the entire game differently.

GTA 6 mods by playstyle

Some mods logically group together. Choose how you want to play - GTA 6 roleplay, racing, freeroam, cinematic, story - and download the pack designed around that style.

Roleplay

Roleplay mods allow players to use GTA 6 as a complex social simulation. These mods introduce custom careers, economies, housing, persistent player data and a rules layer for RP above what the game offers. Most are built on community-made multiplayer platforms, though there is also a robust single-player RP community.

Racing

Racing mods make GTA 6 a capable open-world racing game. They introduce custom racing courses, tune force feedback for wheel users, replace the stock arcade-style handling with simulation-level physics, and provide dedicated drift courses for enthusiasts.

Freeroam

Freeroam mods have no goal other than pure sandbox gameplay. They incorporate spawn menus, traffic density sliders, weather selections, time-of-day sliders and physics playgrounds. Structure is not the objective - stripping away every barrier between you and your next crazy idea is.

PvP

PvP-centric mods retool GTA 6 for competitive play, buffing or weakening weapon damage to balance fights, adding arena map prefabs, layering ranked matchmaking systems, and shipping dedicated FPS HUDs complete with timers, ammo counters, and kill feeds.

FiveM

FiveM-style mods allow for community multiplayer in GTA 6. Operating with a standalone client separate from the base game and connecting to player-run servers, these mods enable dozens of players to exist within a synced world with custom rules, scripts, and economies.

Servers

Server hosting mods deal with the operator side of community multiplayer: server frameworks, admin panels, anti-cheat layers, monetisation systems and anti-griefing tools. If you're interested in running your very own server rather than playing on somebody else's, you're in the right category.

SixM

SixM is a community multiplayer framework designed specifically for GTA 6. SixM builds on the FiveM and RAGE Multiplayer template - dedicated client, community servers, server-streamed mods - while implementing GTA 6-native functionality such as revamped networking and new script APIs.

MLO Interiors

MLO (Multiple Loaded Objects) interior mods are the largest-scale map mods - complete custom interiors that load in when you pass through a trigger volume. You've got mansions, club interiors, hospitals, police stations and abandoned theme parks, and each is basically a small custom level packed into one MLO.

Cinematic

Cinematic mods are designed for making screenshots and machinima. They provide free-cam systems, manual depth-of-field, photo modes, custom film-grade HUDs, and camera animation tools. If you spend more time taking screenshots than playing, you're in the right place.

Story

Story-mode mods expand GTA 6's single-player experience, adding hours of custom missions, dialogue and AI overhauls, dynamic events, and realism systems that make the game feel deeper, more lifelike and more replayable.

Quick start

How to install GTA 6 mods

Three-step quick start. For the full walkthrough see GTAModding.net's install guide.

01

Step 01

Back up & install hooks

Copy your vanilla game directory to your backup folder. Download Script Hook and ASI loader from the original creator - they should never be packaged within another mod's archive.

02

Step 02

Extract the mod

Mods usually go straight into your game folder or load through an RPF editor. Always use a mod manager from day one - it keeps track of every change so you can easily undo anything later.

03

Step 03

Test & iterate

Start the game, verify with the in-game trainer or console that the mod is loading properly, then test on a scratch save. Load mods one at a time so you can easily identify conflicts.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

1

What is the best GTA 6 mods website?

GTA Modding (GTAModding.net) is currently the biggest marketplace and creator community for GTA 6 mods. Creators are verified and listings can be free or paid. There are forums, guides and leaderboards for creators. GTA 6 Directory covers the larger scene and features curated selections from across categories and playstyles.

2

How do I install GTA 6 mods?

Install a script hook + ASI loader, unpack the mod into your game folder or load it through an RPF editor, then confirm via the in-game console or trainer menu that it is installed. Remember to back up your original files beforehand. For a detailed walk-through, visit GTAModding.net's installation guide at /how-to-install-gta-6-mods.

3

Are GTA 6 mods free?

Most are free. There's a big open-source ethos in the community, and a lot of authors will release their work for free or accept optional donations. GTAModding.net has a dedicated /free-gta-6-mods listing for easily locating free downloads, as well as a /marketplace area for listings from verified creators who wish to sell their work.

4

Will GTA 6 mods get me banned?

Story mode mods are safe to use. Using mods in GTA 6 Online (or any other official multiplayer mode) can get your account banned. FiveM-style servers are community-made frameworks that operate completely separately from official Rockstar servers and don't trigger the official anti-cheat.

5

Is GTA 6 modding legal?

Single-player modding tends to be tolerated because of Rockstar's stance on offline-only mods. Modding multiplayer is against Take-Two's terms of service. Sharing copyrighted assets without authorisation carries its own legal risks. See gtamodding.net/is-gta-6-modding-legal for the full legal FAQ.

6

Can I run multiple GTA 6 mods at once?

Yes - that's standard practice. The exception is conflicts: two mods that alter the same file (handling.meta, weapons.meta, the same MLO interior) will overwrite each other. Use a mod manager to keep track of installs, and always read the compatibility notes of each mod.

7

How do I create my own GTA 6 mod?

Choose your path based on your expertise: coders start with script mods, 3D artists make vehicle or character models in Blender, and level designers make MLO interiors. The /guides section on GTAModding.net will teach you the basics of each track.
